What is a Kiln Opening - Restocking?

My work is all hand made, one of a kind. I work in series, making 6-20 similar pieces and then move to a new series. Sometimes the series vary only a little, other times the look is completely different. Some are all hand built and sculpted, other times they are thrown on a potters wheel and altered. About every month or so I have enough work to fill my kilns and to change gears. I photograph the work, write descriptions, and post it on my website. When this is done, I have a Kiln Opening - Restocking. I announce the sale to all of my subscribers and on facebook. Since I only sell my work on line and at 3-4 events, this is a convenient way of purchasing my art.

My plan is to have a Restocking Event every 3 months...
March, June, September, December.

It's time for me to play! And what better material than clay.

I make one of a kind originals

for you to create mindfulness

for your home or office &

your eating and drinking ware.

Why I make what I do:

All of my work is inspired by nature and family; reflecting constant change.

I make two bodies of work, sculpted geese and functional work.

My functional work  may be stoneware that is completely functional;

they are dishwasher and microwave safe.

Some functional pieces are obvara fired;

they are dry food safe.

Usually I  make ceramic mugs and baskets as my functional art form.  The daily routine of eating and drinking become a time to be mindful. Eat soup, drink tea, beer, coffee, breathe. As an artist I want you to stop and feel the varied textures on my wares. Be present. Escape to a better place.  For me, nature ... plants, trees, the tidal marsh changing from dawn to dark all inspire the surfaces of my work.

My sculpted work are usually geese,

especially the babies.

I also make tree bark look ceramics.

My Geese

Maintaining balance in life-which is filled with continued change-is a constant challenge.   Children, adolescents, adults: each stage of life has obstacles to overcome and physical and emotional effects to endure.  Obstacles in life shape people into who they are and overcoming these obstacles allow people to change their possible destiny.  I admire the values of our past generations and see geese with similar qualities.  The geese I make personify people in different stages of life.  They have a distinctive surface treatment that reflects how life has affected them.

I have chosen the Obvara firing technique which is symbolic of life.    After carefully sculpting the waterfowl, I make a mold so the piece can be replicated and when I pour the slip/clay into the form, the walls of the bird are an equal thickness.  I then subject my clay birds to extreme temperature changes, firing them to 1800 degrees and then submerging them into a bath of room temperature water mixed with yeast, flour and other magical ingredients.  The severe temperature difference leaves distinct, unique marks.   Just as the bath determines the look of the goose, the events and people in our lives shape who we become.  Some become beautiful; life has been good.  When life is difficult, the surface can be harsh or it may break the individual.  These scars are an important part of who they are.

When obstacles threaten the balance of life, the geese are there for each other.    Their stages of life are guided by the seasons and each other.   I am hopeful that people will learn from the geese, reminisce life and the people that surround them. Through nature’s integrity, I am hopeful that we can restore our own balance and harmony.

Why Trees and Leaves?

As a gardener, I love when the first leaves pop through the ground. They crack the surface ready to face the sun. At this stage I think all leaves look about the same. But like children, with care, nourishment, love and time they grow into healthy individuals. Sometimes, like people, some of these plants need to "hang on" to others for support. Twisting tendrils help and these plants not only provide us with food, but with seeds for the next generation. If the seed happens to be that of a tree, the outer surface of the tree changes in time; like the aging process changes our own bodies. The bark becomes highly textured, the tree gets larger, the color changes and parts of the tree, like branches, limbs or the "heart" may become damaged. Even though the tree has changed, it is strong, always giving, providing food, shade, shelter and the air that we breathe.

You have the opportunity

to support my art journey and

to purchase  one of a kind pieces

to create a mindful environment.

Special Orders?

I love to make large special orders.  A company looking for handmade gifts, with perhaps your company logo or something special for you, works.  I like to make large orders of wedding party favors or shower favors.  But one of a kind special orders ...  only sometimes.  My production schedule is extremely busy and special orders can throw the balance off. A large order becomes the next cycle of work I create. If it a small and easy to accommodate special order that  can be done within my production schedule, I will consider a special order.  There are no returns on special orders.

Returns?

I want you to be completely satisfied with my ceramic art.  I work hard to write accurate descriptions and take good photographs so you can make an informed decision.  With that being said, sometimes things are not as you had imagined.  I want you to be elated and recommend me to all of your friends.   Please contact me so we can work out the particulars.   I am a small business. You will be responsible for return shipping.  Please insure your package and pack it well.  Email me if you want to make a return.

Shipping?

My first choice to ship is the US Post Office.  Shipping is built into the price.  All shipping is for Parcel Select, unless Priority 3 day is similar in price.  If you need it sooner, there will be an up-charge.  We will email to see if that's the option you want.

Food safe? Microwave & Dishwasher safe?

All of my functional ceramic work is food safe, microwave safe and dishwasher safe.

Any vessel that is Obvara fired IS NOT presently food safe. I am working on trying to have that happen.

Broken piece? Repair or make another?

While a piece might be able to be repaired, the time and uncertainty makes it cost prohibitive.  Many times I can make a piece very similar.  The tree bark work and the shape of mugs can be made again.  The glazes will not always act the same way.

Depending on the kind of repair you are looking for,
E-6000  is a great glue.

Do Obvara fired pieces really have magic?

Magic is believing; believing in something bigger than yourself.  I do believe that Obvara fired work has a magic to it.  It has strong historical roots in the Baltic region during medieval times and people have believed that work fired with this process protected them from evil. These vessels always provided enough food.
For me, using a decorative process in which you never know what the results will be is pure  magic!  Magic in believing that this is the process to use, despite all of the extra work and uncertainty.
